Texas Officers Fatally Shoot Gunman Who Wounded Deputy

Investigators say officers shot and killed a man accused of firing at a Texas sheriff and later wounding a deputy.

Police in Borger were seeking 44-year-old Christopher Garza when he was located Thursday near Fritch, 25 miles northeast of Amarillo.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Cindy Barkley said the gunman opened fire and wounded a Hutchinson County sheriff's deputy. Other officers returned fire, killing Garza.

Barkley said the deputy, whose name wasn't released, suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Sheriff Kirk Coker on Wednesday tried to stop an SUV linked to an unrelated shooting. Police said someone inside fired at Coker's patrol vehicle, striking the windshield, then drove off. Coker wasn't hurt.

A warrant was then issued for Garza for aggravated assault against a peace officer.
