Houston police said a man has been killed in a shootout with officers after a cross-county chase.
The chase started in the Brazoria County town of Liverpool and ended in southeast Houston on Wednesday. Police said they engaged the driver after a man said he'd been assaulted by a person with a weapon.
Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said the driver eventually stopped at a Houston home and fired a shotgun at a Pearland officer and that the officer shot back.
She also said the man then pulled a handgun out of the truck and fired at officers, at least four of whom returned fire. The suspect died at the scene.
Neighbors tell KTRK-TV and KHOU-TV they heard about 50 gunshots.
No officers were injured.
The suspect and officers' names haven't been released.
