The Texas Lottery is suspending sales of the multistate Monopoly Millionaires' Club game two months after its launch in 23 states.
In a statement issued Thursday, the lottery said sales of the game will halt after Friday's drawing and winners will be given 180 days from their drawing dates to claim their prices.
The lottery said "sales for the game have not met the lottery industry's projections and have continued to decline nationally since its introduction."
"Unfortunately, players have not embraced the game as anticipated, and our options to change the game while it is being sold are limited in scope and challenging to implement," said Texas Lottery director Gary Grief.
The lottery says those slow sales mean the lottery would be paying out more prize money than it took in through game sales.
The Monopoly Millionaires' Club game has $5 tickets and was aimed at a niche audience that does not compete with Powerball and Mega Millions, two other national games.
The game's weekly Friday drawings have grand prizes limited to $25 million or less, a move away from jackpots worth hundreds of millions of dollars players have come to expect.
