Texas Historical Markers Errors

About 16,000 historical markers can be found in Texas detailing the state's rich history, but it's not unusual to find errors amid the explanations.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports the errors can run from incorrect dates to misspelling people's names.

Bob Brinkman, who coordinates the state's historical marker program, says three or four of the 300 plaques erected each year have incorrect information. Each plaque costs about $1,800 to replace.

The plaques depict everything from notable figures to battle scenes.

Brinkman says the Texas Historical Commission relies on county historical commissions to make sure the facts in an application for a marker are accurate.

The state commission ends up replacing about 30 plaques each year, though not all are replaced because of errors.
