Texas Gubernatorial Race Two Months from Vote

With about two months until Election Day, the race to become the next governor of Texas is heating up.

On Monday, State Sen. Wendy Davis was in Dallas for the Democratic Labor Day Picnic, where she spoke to the crowd, shook hands and posed for pictures.

"They are looking for someone who will fight for them. Fight for their children's educations," Davis said.

Davis and Attorney General Greg Abbott are running to replace Gov. Rick Perry, who may be eyeing another White House campaign.

Abbott has led Davis in the polls since the campaign began, and the latest Rasmussen poll shows Davis behind by eight points.

NBC 5 asked her about that Monday.

"When Ann Richards was at this point in 1990, she was 20 points down, and she won. The reason she won was that people came out in a grassroots effort to elect her to be their voice in the capitol. That is what I have been seeing in this state for months," Davis said.

Abbott spent Labor Day dove hunting. He plans to be in North Texas on Tuesday, talking about his education plan.

Election Day is Nov. 4.
