Texas A&M University experts say a more than 1-ton anchor found in 2008 in Puget Sound north of Seattle is not as old as first thought.
School officials on Monday announced restoration of the 10-foot anchor is complete -- and it's not from the HMS Chatham. The British vessel was known to be in the area around 1792.
Jim Jobling with A&M's Center for Maritime Archaeology & Conservation said it's likely the anchor was from the 1820s. Efforts continue to identify a ship associated with the anchor discovered by diver Doug Monk.
The anchor in 2014 was trucked to College Station. Early estimates put the anchor at 900 to 1,400 pounds. It's actually 2,425 pounds.
The anchor will be returned to Monk, who had no immediate comment Monday.
