About 300 North Texas teens spent their Saturday with a gun in hand; training in their sport that’s quickly growing in their schools.
The Fort Worth Trap and Skeet Club hosted their youth trap open where local middle and high schoolers put their skills on display and took aim for prizes.
Shooting is serious business for these kids though.
Shellee Enfinger, CEO at the Youth Target Foundation, said the sport has really sprung up for students in the last 5 years, starting with Flower Mound Marcus High School in 2011.
“Now we have nearly, about 400 teams in Texas,” said Enfinger.
The YTF serves as a governing body for those teams and helps ensure that the sport is passed on safely. To help, they have former college and Olympians working with the kids including 2008 Olympian Sean McLelland and 2 time gold medalist Vincent Hancock who is also competing in Rio this year.
Students at the tournament said even in their short time the sport has grown by leaps.

Marcus High School’s team is now up to about 60 members; many saying they were drawn to the co-ed sport that just about anyone can pick up and learn.
