High School Senior Dies After Trying to Cross West Loop 820

A Brewer High School senior died Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Loop 820 in Fort Worth earlier in the morning, police say.

White Settlement ISD says grief counselors will be at the school on Wednesday when classes resume following winter break.

William Brawley, 18, ran out of gas and was hit and killed when trying to run across the highway.

It happened shortly after 6 a.m., just south of the Las Vegas Trail exit on Loop 820.

Family friend Frank Spann says Brawley was with his younger sister and one of her friends. Brawley made sure they crossed over safely first, before he went. Brawley died at the scene a short time later in his sister's arms.

"It was just an absolute shock to hear that and it broke our hearts," Spann said. "And I couldn't get out of bed fast enough to get over there and comfort them any little bit I could."

The teens weren't supposed to be out at that hour. The girls were uninjured but were taken to the hospital after being shaken up.

Friends spent the day consoling the family at there home, which is about a mile away.

"I think about him [Brawley], I think about this family, I also think about the driver that hit him," Spann says. "One life was lost today, but many, many were changed and it'll never be the same for us with the Brawley's again. I care about them quite a bit and they're very good, good parents."

The driver that hit Brawley did stop and was shaken up as well. Fort Worth Police say while the accident remains under investigation, no charges are expected.
