Police said the victim — later identified as Joseph Huerta — crashed a white Acura sedan on eastbound U.S. 80 near Collins Road at about 10 p.m.

Huerta exited the vehicle and was then fatally struck by a dark SUV.

Huerta was a senior at North Mesquite High School where he played soccer and ran cross country.

Friday, friends and teammates released balloons in his honor.

"He was always there for us and he'd always have a smile on his face. Everytime I'd walk up to him he'd be happy to see me and greet me," said Moisces Nunez.

"The person that did this to him, they need to be come up and face forward to know what they did because it's terrible," said Nick Mosqueda.

Sheriff's officials said they're searching for the SUV that likely has front-end damage. They asked anyone with information about this incident to call them at 214-749-8641.

A Mesquite Independent School District official said Huerta was a senior at North Mesquite High School where he played soccer and ran cross country.
