Officials say a 15-year-old driver died and a 14-year-old passenger was injured after their car slammed into a telephone pole during a police chase in southeast Texas.

The Department of Public Safety says the wreck happened near Huntsville at about 1 a.m. Tuesday. Investigators say they don't yet know why the suspects fled when a DPS trooper tried to pull them over.

Authorities say the 15-year-old driver died at the scene. The passenger was taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Their names have not yet been released.

DPS Sgt. Terry Barnhill says the driver was traveling at over 100 mph when he crashed into the telephone pole.
