Teen Admits To Causing Fatal Injuries to Girlfriend's Baby: Irving Police

Police say an Irving teenager admitted to causing severe injuries to an infant that ultimately led to her death.

Irving police officers responded to a call for an unconscious person on Jan. 4, in the 1900 block of Rosebud Drive.

Officers discovered a 1-year-old girl unconscious and unresponsive inside the home. She was taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas, where doctors realized she had a severe brain injury, as well as other internal injuries, police said.

On Jan. 9, police were notified that the girl died after being taken off life support.

The child's mother's boyfriend, Allante Marquis Edwards, was home at the time when police were called, as was a 3-year-old girl and a 6-month-old boy.

Officers interviewed Edwards about what happened, and said his account of how the injuries occurred gave them reason to get a warrant for his arrest.

Investigators discovered the 6-month-old boy also had injuries consistent with being assaulted, police said.

Police arrested Edwards, 19, on two charges of injury to a child.

On Wednesday, police say, Edwards admitted in a video recorded statement to throwing the baby girl across a room on Jan. 4.

According to probable cause affidavit documents, Edwards said the child did not move or talk afterwards. He left her in her crib for 5 to 6 hours before calling 911, according to the court papers.

Police said upon Edwards confession, the injury to a child charges were dropped, and he now faces a charge of capital murder.

Edwards is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning to determine his bond amount.

Irving police are continuing to investigate this case.
