Switch to Chip Cards Not So Smooth

The switch to those chip credit cards has been anything but smooth.

A representative from the White House met with consumer and industry representatives at a Capitol Hill forum Tuesday. Overall, they identified three big problems with the rollout of those new chip cards.

First, not everyone has them. Only half of all credit cards with magnetic strips have been replaced.

Second, even if a consumer has one, not all stores have switched over their marchinery to accept the new cards.

And the third problem? You know this if you've had to use the new cards. When you stick it in the reader, you have to wait.

"It does seem to take longer," said Camille Fischer with the White house National Economic Council. "It takes those seconds because it is authenticating so it is an aditional security step."

Long term, consumer groups say the chip card is just the beginning. They say to keep our information really safe, we'll need to add a pin which is a personal identification number to the chip cards.
