Suspicious Device Brought to Haltom City Police

Possible grenade found at rental home being cleaned by homeowners

The Haltom City Police Department was evacuated Monday evening after a resident brought a possible grenade to police.

The device was found when homeowners were cleaning a rental house after the occupants were evicted, firefighters said. Another person took a box of blankets the homeowners put in the yard and discovered an apparent grenade inside when that person got home.

The person brought the device to the police department, where officers advised him to leave the box on the counter, the fire department said. The police department was then evacuated

The North East Fire Department Association bomb squad removed the device at about 5:40 p.m. It will detonate the device at an area bomb range.

The police and fire departments are checking the house where the device was found for other devices.

The fire department said the grenade could have belonged to a World War II veteran who probably left it behind at the home.
