Suspect Accused in Alleged Denton Assault Spree

Denton police say a man assaulted a young girl, sexually assaulted a woman and then broke into a third person's house all in the span of about three hours early Friday.

Derek Goalen, 26, was arrested after he was spotted two blocks from the third alleged attack.

The first call to police came from a home on the 300 block of North Crawford Street just after 4 a.m., where the caller said a man assaulted a 9-year-old girl and then left the scene.

Then, at about 5:45 a.m., police got a call about an alleged sexual assault on the 200 block of North Joshua Street. The second caller gave the same description as the first caller, investigators said.

And at 6:10 a.m., a third call came to police, this time from the 2400 block of East McKinney, where a woman said she woke up to a man in her bedroom.

The description she gave matched the other two, police said.

Nearby resident Joe Patterson said when her husband left for work Friday morning, he saw all of the police cars in the neighborhood and called her, warning her to be careful.

They both thought, based on the number of officers in the area, there might be a suspect on the run.

"I opened up the gun case and made sure I had a loaded gun," said Patterson.

At about 8:20 a.m., police saw Goalen nearby on East McKinney in the parking lot of a law firm and took him into custody.

For now, he faces charges of sexual assault, and police said there will likely be more charges to follow.
