Students Vote to Rename School Named for Confederate General

Students at a Dallas middle school have voted to rename their campus that now carries the moniker of a Confederate general.

On Friday afternoon, 61 percent of kids at Hood Middle School took a vote to change to rename the school named after Confederate Gen. John B. Hood.

Here's a look at the vote broken down by grade level, according to The Dallas Morning News:

  • Eighth Grade: Yes - 48 percent; No - 51 percent
  • Seventh Grade: Yes - 68 percent; No – 31 percent
  • Sixth Grade: Yes - 66 percent; No - 34 percent

It's a step in a process that could lead to a name change by Dallas Independent School District trustees, who have the final say.

The school has about 1,000 students, with 84 percent Hispanic, 15 percent black and less than 1 percent white.

Principal LaTonya Lockhart said some students asked a teacher about changing the name. Students will also be able to recommend new names that they could vote on later.

NBC 5's Holley Ford contributed to this report.
