Stolen Peacock Returns Home to Dallas Neighborhood

After nearly a month of worrying, families in one Dallas neighborhood are more than relieved after a familiar wild peacock returned to their neighborhood.

In early April, home surveillance video in the Beckley Club Estates in Oak Cliff showed a man snatching the wild male peacock off the sidewalk and then shoving the bird into the back of an SUV, injuring it.

Shocked families helped search for the peacock and called police, but for weeks there was no sign of the bird until Wednesday night.

“We were coming home, we pulled up in our driveway and we saw him! At first you think that can’t be him, so you pinch yourself. So we got out of the car and got closer and saw the damage on him and we said that’s him. He’s back,” said neighbor Stephanie Ware.

Ware said peacocks have been roaming the neighborhood for years and the bird that was stolen was the eldest and largest of the group.

She said she doesn’t know if the man who took the bird returned him or if somehow he found his way back to the area.

“It’s just amazing. We don’t know how he came back, but we’re just so glad he came back,” Ware said.

The damage on the bird is visible, with several of his long feathers missing and even one that’s broken and drags on the ground.

Bird experts tell NBC 5 the feathers should grow back within the year.

Ware said neighbors now have a warning for anyone thinking of pulling a similar stunt.

“Don’t do it. Everyone in the neighborhood is really watching out — even more so now. They’re like our pets and we’ll do anything to protect them,” Ware said.
