State to Investigate Home After Autistic Man Fatally Shot

A state agency says it will investigate a group home from which an autistic man ran away and was later killed by an Austin homeowner after trying to force his way into the residence.

The Austin American-Statesman reported that 24-year-old Jared James was killed on Monday. Authorities said they won't pursue charges against the homeowner, who told investigators he feared for his family's safety.

The Travis County district attorney's office will review the case, which a police spokeswoman said is standard procedure.

The group home is operated by Kentucky-based company ResCare. The Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities Service launched its investigation Tuesday.

A ResCare spokeswoman said James ran away from the home after he'd become agitated and that a staff member couldn't convince him to return.
