State Game Wardens Seize Shark Boat in Gulf

Texas game wardens seized a Mexican shark-fishing boat in state waters near the Texas-Mexico border.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens were patrolling the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday for illegal fishing activity when they spotted a Mexican fishing boat northbound in Texas waters.

When the game wardens tried to stop the boat, its occupants tried to race back toward Mexican waters, but according to the TPWD, after a brief pursuit game wardens stopped the boat.

Two fishermen were arrested and taken to the U.S. Coast Guard station on South Padre Island. The boat was seized along with illegal long-line fishing gear. Cases are pending.

According to the TPWD sharks are harvested not only for their meat, but also for their fins which in such high demand they can be sold on a world-wide black market.
