State officials have approved a $300,000 grant for a university study of whether monarch butterflies should be added to the federal list of endangered species.
State Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced the grant to the University of Texas at San Antonio on Tuesday.
Hegar noted that the butterfly passes through Texas during its annual migration to and from the mountains of northern Mexico.
The monarch butterfly is the state insect of Texas.
