State Department Expands Travel Warning to Include Popular Mexico Tourist Destinations

A travel warning from the U.S. State Department now includes the popular Mexican vacation destinations of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Los Cabos.

In an update posted Tuesday, the State Department says gang activity and homicides are in the rise at vacation spots that are popular with American tourists.

The warning sounds ominous.

"And the government means it that way," said Steve Cosgrove, of Dynamic Travel and Cruises in Southlake. "But again, it's using common sense."

Cosgrove said he hasn't had any clients asking to change or cancel reservations to Mexico.

"I think people are becoming smart enough to know there are places you don't go," Cosgrove said. "Whether it's Cancun, Chicago, Denver or Las Vegas."

At the International Arrivals Terminal at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Tsipi Gardner had heard about the increased violence. She was waiting for two young family friends to return from their trip to Cancun.

"If I could stop them I would have, because I was so scared for them," Gardner said, as she waited. "I'm so relieved they're coming back today."
