South Texas Mother Surrenders After Infant Dies

A South Texas woman charged with child abandonment in the death of her infant son has turned herself in to authorities.

The Brownsville Herald reported that 19-year-old Diana Torres of San Benito was being held at the Cameron County jail Tuesday morning after she surrendered on Friday. The county sheriff's office has charged Torres and her 50-year-old mother-in-law, Nelda Rodriguez, with child endangerment. Rodriguez also turned herself in last week.

Deputies said the women left 3-month-old Jordan Rodriguez home alone to take Torres' husband to the hospital for a reported seizure. The women told authorities they found the child covered in vomit and took him the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His cause of death is unclear.

The women are each being held on a $150,000 bond. Online jail records did not indicate attorneys.
