South Texas Man Sentenced in Fatal Crash

A South Texas man has been sentenced to 10 years of probation for killing a 54-year-old woman in a car crash after his brakes and accelerator malfunctioned.

The McAllen Monitor reported a judge sentenced 23-year-old Jonathan Sanchez of Edinburg on Monday. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault in the 2013 death of Maria Garcia.

Sanchez says the accelerator of his 2006 Ford Five Hundred malfunctioned and he couldn't stop his vehicle. A 2013 class action lawsuit against the company alleges the vehicles had problems with unintentional acceleration.

Prosecutors asked for a harsher sentence and say Sanchez knew his car had been malfunctioning before the crash.
