Slow Down, and Buckle Up

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers will be out in force over the long Memorial Day holiday weekend looking for drunken drivers and other violators.

A DPS statement Thursday says speeders and travelers not wearing seat belts also will be targeted.

Texas troopers, during 2009 Memorial Day weekend, arrested 622 drivers on DWI charges and wrote more than 8,500 speeding tickets. Troopers issued 1,937 seat belt and 521 child restraint citations.

Texas is part of the nationwide "Click It or Ticket" program aimed at cracking down on travelers not wearing seat belts.

The Transportation Department this week estimated 84 percent of motorists wore their seat belts in 2009. About 83 percent were buckled up when traveling during 2008.

Memorial Day is Monday.
