Shoplifting Suspect Dies After Supermarket Police Shooting

A man caught in a Waco supermarket with $80 worth of beef brisket he was suspected of stealing has died of wounds from when he was shot by police.

Waco police identified the dead suspect as 48-year-old Randal Lance-Hughes of Waco.

The incident happened about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at an H-E-B supermarket in northern Waco. Police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton says the man had been detained in a small security room at the store when he drew a knife on a store security specialist.

Swanton says that when the white suspect struggled with officers and an officer's stun gun failed to subdue him, another officer shot the man twice.

Swanton says the man died late Tuesday night in a Waco hospital.

The officers involved are on administrative leave pending investigation.
