Shields Elementary School Rebuilds After Tornado Damage

Thursday is the last day of school for students Shields Elementary School in the Red Oak Independent School District.

It is also the last day students there will use a temporary building for classes.

Students at Shields had to move to the former Red Oak Junior High School after Shields was damaged by a tornado on Dec. 26, 2015.

Red Oak ISD said repairs at the damaged school should be completed by the start of the 2016-2017 school year on Aug. 15.

There is still more construction that needs to be completed over the summer including the roof, walls and interior of the building.

The district said there are some added safety features at the newly restored school. A film is being installed on windows to provide shatter resistance and windstorm protection and clips were installed to hold down HVAC units on the roof during strong storms.
