The crash occurred before 5 p.m. on southbound West Loop 820 at White Settlement Road.

Fort Worth Fire Department officials said a sedan with four people inside was stopped in the middle of the highway due to a flat tire when a Ford Explorer Sport Trac crashed into its rear at an unknown rate of speed.

A woman in the car, 81-year-old Guadalupe Palacios, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

A 6-year-old girl in the sedan, later identified as London Pena, was transported to Cook Children's Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Officials said she was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.

"It’s really tough on us as firefighters," Fort Worth Fire Department's Kyle Clay said. "We just want to remind people to put children in car seats if they’re the right age and size."

One occupant in the car was transported to a Fort Worth hospital with minor injuries, according to police. Another adult occupant in the car refused treatment or transport at the scene, officials said.

The crash remains under investigation, and additional details have not been released.

All lanes of southbound West Loop 820 were back open by about 7:30 p.m., police said.
