Senate Committee Vote on Air Force Planes

Senate committee vote on keeping eight C-130 Hercules planes in the state

A Senate committee was expected to approve a bill Thursday that would keep eight Texas Air National Guard cargo transport planes in the state.

Texas' congressional delegation and several Gulf Coast states' governors have been fighting a proposal to move the C-130 Hercules planes used for post-hurricane evacuations.

They say the big transport planes should remain based at Fort Worth's Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base. They say it would be more difficult to mobilize the aircraft to help with Gulf Coast disasters if they're in Montana.

A Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee Tuesday approved a $604 billion defense spending bill that reverses proposed Pentagon cuts in Air Force personnel and equipment. The proposal included moving the transport planes out of Fort Worth in two years.
