Arrival of School Textbooks Delayed

Texas public schools will likely have to start classes in August without new textbooks.

The Texas Education Agency has confirmed that reconfiguring an online ordering system combined with a delay in state funding for textbooks will probably postpone the arrival of new books into September. School starts the week of Aug. 24.

State officials said the new system will eventually ease book buying, but many local school leaders are not happy.

Arlington school board member Jamie Sullins said students "need instructional materials on the first day of school."

The new ordering system and other changes required by Senate Bill 6 will revamp how districts buy books.
