School Accountability Overhaul Heads to Gov. Perry

Students will still be required to pass standardized tests to be promoted to the next grade but the exams won't be as high stakes as they are now under a school accountability overhaul headed to the governor's office.
The sweeping legislation approved by the Legislature late Sunday is intended to better prepare all students for success after high school.
It changes high school graduation and grade promotion requirements.
High school students would still have to complete four years of mathematics, science, English and social studies under the plan, but they will also need two foreign language credits, one fine art and one physical education course.
Teacher groups have complained that the proposal does not go far enough to ease the burden of standardized tests.
