SMU Student Reports Rape in Campus Dorm: Police

A Southern Methodist University student reported that she was raped Wednesday night in a campus dormitory, according to SMU police.

A female student told investigators that a fellow student, an acquaintance, sexually assaulted her at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Ware Commons residential building, in the 5800 block of Bush Avenue, according to a campus crime alert sent out around 2 p.m. Thursday.

"The fact that SMU decided to tell the students so that we know what's going on and we can be on the lookout inspires so much more faith in you than it would if they just pretended like it didn't happen," said SMU freshman Moriah Riasis.

In the crime alert, the SMU Police Department asked anyone "with information about this matter" to come forward.

A university spokesperson declined to answer several questions about the reported incident, specifically those pertaining to the status of the alleged perpetrator.

"This remains an active police investigation, and to protect the integrity of that process, no other information is being released at this time," said Kent Best, SMU executive director of news and communications, in an emailed response to questions about the reported suspect.
