SMU Looks to Become Bowl Eligible Under 2nd Year Coach, Chad Morris

Had Chad Morris stayed at Clemson, there is a chance he would have won a National Championship last season with Deshaun Watson and becomes the head coach of some mid-tier program. Morris was not willing to wait. Despite having a talented roster and superstar quarterback at his disposal, he leaped at the opportunity to become the SMU head football coach before the 2015 season. Lucky for Mustang fans.

While SMU's record was 2-10, that does not tell the whole story. Quarterback Matt Davis took a huge step forward and the team scored more than twice as many rushing touchdowns as the season prior, a direct result of Morris' spread-offense attack. The defense took a small step back with the changed pace of play, but the offense was worlds better.

While Morris is still pretty unproven as a head coach, if he gets a few years to recruit his system's type of players and develop his offensive system then SMU fans should see quality results. Morris knows how to build a productive offense, with a little defensive help SMU could contend for an American Conference title in the next few years. Morris might be the right guy to pick the program back up.
