Rowlett Student Brought Gun to School

"Editors note: a previous version of this article incorrectly identified the school district, the incident occurred in Garland ISD."

The Garland Independent School District says a student who brought a handgun to School was taken into custody and immediately suspended Thursday.

The school district said the sophomore boy didn't threaten anyone at Rowlett High School.

The student was taken into custody without incident. Rowlett police won't say if the weapon was loaded but they are still investigating.

Under the school district's zero tolerance policy, the student is automatically suspended for a year.

In a letter that is being sent out to parents on Friday, Rowlett H.S. principal Michelle Bounds writes: "The safety of students on campus is of the utmost concern to the district. I would like to commend our students for bringing this isolated event to our attention. They consistently police one other and communicate concerns to the administration. I also appreciate your understanding the confidential nature of police investigations. We will remain vigilant in providing a safe school environment which is conducive to teaching and learning."
