Rockwall Police Investigate Shooting of Teen

The shooting of a 17-year-old Rockwall Heath High School student has puzzled police and neighbors.

Rockwall police said the teenager was shot Sunday evening in the 2700 block of Faircrest Drive. Officers said the teen was walking home when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire.

Police said the teen called his father, who picked him up and rushed him to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Rockwall. Paramedics later transported the teen to a Dallas hospital by medical helicopter.

On Tuesday, police said the teen was in good condition and recovering from a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen.

Becka Malone attends school with the teen who was injured and said her peers have little information to go on. She lives right down the street from where the shooting happened.

“That does make me nervous that I could’ve been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I could’ve been going for a walk down here and that could’ve been me,” said Malone.

“It’s a little nerve-wracking. I mean, it happened in our neighborhood 100 yards from our house,” said 18-year-old Andrew Caquelin.

His mother says it nerves her how easily anyone can get a hold of a gun.

“It kinda freaks you out! I mean, you know, it’s a different time. You want your kids to be able to go out and not worry about stuff like that and it’s nerve-wracking," said Anna Caquelin, parent. "High schoolers today seem to take their aggression out in a very different way.”

Due to his age, police are not releasing the teen's name.

Rockwall police believe the teen was targeted, but at this point have made no arrests and do not have a motive.

"Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and there are no threats to the general public," Rockwall police chief Kirk Riggs said in an email.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Rockwall Police Department at 972-772-6701 or Rockwall County Crime Stoppers Tip Hotline at 972-771-TIPS.
