Road Closures Coming Near Arlington Bridge Project

A major construction project in Arlington could impact your commute this week. Starting Tuesday, various lanes of Interstate 20 will be closed while crews continue their work on a new bridge along Center Street.

Crews are in the early stages of building a bridge that will connect Center Street on both sides of I-20. The City of Arlington says the goal of the $10.4 million project is to help economic growth along that corridor and ease traffic congestion on nearby Collins Street, Matlock Road and Cooper Street.

Starting Tuesday, one eastbound lane of I-20 will be closed near Matlock from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Texas Department of Transportation says drivers should expect additional lane closures as construction on the project continues. Digital street signs near that area will let drivers know about any delays or closures.

Eva Nails & Spa opened just two months ago near I-20 and Center Street. While the team there loves being at the Arlington Highlands, they wish their customers had a more direct route to them.

“We’re kind of hidden right now,” said Jessica Brown, an employee at Eva Nails & Spa.

For now, the only ways people can access the salon are to cut across parking lots or take smaller roads to the east end of the shopping center. That’s why they’re particularly excited about the construction happening just down the street.

“So if the bridge brings [people] right over here, that’s going to be great for our business and the Highlands also,” said Brown.

The most significant delays aren’t expected until late this year – but big or small, Brown thinks they’ll be worth it in the end.

“I think that’s going to be really helpful,” said Brown.

The project is slated to be complete by summer of 2016.
