Richardson police are warning residents about a possible scam involving a man telling homeowners he’s there to upgrade their home security systems.
The man approached a homeowner that doesn't have an alarm system — only an alarm company's stickers outside the home — and mentioned the upgrade. Police said the resident told them the man claimed to be with the alarm company on the stickers.
The resident captured the encounter on surveillance video and gave it to police.
Police said they think he may have been trying to change the homeowner’s alarm system or get them to sign a contract with a different alarm company. [[320284791,C]]
Police said the man showing up without an appointment and not wearing company clothes were red flags.
"If [citizens] are hesitant at all about who it is or what they want, go ahead and call the police," Richardson Police Department's Sgt. Roger Steiman said. "Let us come out and talk to them and make sure they’re legitimate. We can contact the company that they’re with and just verify that they are who they say they are."
