Report Studies Impact of Texas Spaceport

A draft study of the potential environmental impacts of building a rocket launch site in the southernmost tip of Texas says the project would significantly increase noise and light for a nearby neighborhood of mostly seasonal residents and could affect several endangered species.

However, the draft environmental impact statement released Monday by the Federal Aviation Administration indicates that if California-based SpaceX implements a variety of conservation measures and steps to mitigate the effects, there would be no "significant impacts" on wildlife.

The draft report is an important step in SpaceX's consideration of the site not far from where the Rio Grande empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

The final report is a necessary precursor to the FAA issuing licenses allowing SpaceX to launch rockets there.
