Relocated 100-Year-Old Oak Thriving

City paid nearly $200,000 to move tree

Experts say a massive oak in Southeast Texas that was moved about 1,500 feet for replanting has lost some leaves but is thriving.

Erik Hess with Hess Landscape Construction Co. says the so-called Ghirardi oak in League City is doing great.

His company in June relocated the 100-year-old tree to make way for street expansion. The city paid nearly $200,000 to move the tree to a park instead of cutting the oak.

The Galveston County Daily News reported Tuesday that the Compton oak will be monitored for three years. Reviews by Hess are part of the process.

Hess says brown leaves piling up on the ground are part of typical defoliation during new growth.

The 400-ton oak is named for one of League City's early farm families.
