An eight-story Hilton hotel that opened in downtown Plainview in West Texas in 1929 but has been abandoned for more than 30 years is about to gain new life after the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs has approved a tax credit application to renovate the building into a multifamily housing project.
Plainview Assistant City Manager Andrew Freeman tells the Plainview Daily Herald the agency's approval culminates a more than year-long effort that's hoped will spur economic activity in the city's downtown.
The hotel had 125 guest rooms, a ballroom, lounge and private dining rooms when it opened July 3, 1929. It's to be converted into about 27 rental units with one to three bedrooms. Developer MRE Capital says it intends to spend about $7.7 million on the project.
