RadioShack to Sell Off Some Stores, Sell Rest: Report

The end appears to be near for Fort Worth-based RadioShack as we know it.

The electronics retailer has operated for nearly a century but after recent financial troubles, the company may be forced to take drastic measures.

RadioShack is in a bankruptcy deal that would sell half its stores to Sprint Corporation, while the other half will close -- that's according to Bloomberg News which is quoting sources who were not named but reportedly have knowledge of the discussions.

The move would affect the 4,200 RadioShack stores in the United States and the company's headquarters in Fort Worth.

The RadioShack at Town East Mall in Mesquite closed Sunday and, according to The Dallas Morning News, the location at The Parks in Arlington is expected to close this spring.

RadioShack has already started clearance sales at many stores across the country.

In the last year and a half, RadioShack did a major overhaul and relaunched the brand but a lack of revenue from online sales and a decline in foot traffic at stores has brought the company to where it is now.

According to Bloomberg, Radio Shack has had 11 straight unprofitable quarters.

Back in September, RadioShack warned it had serious cash problems.

Efforts to turn the company around over the past five years failed with RadioShack failing to grab a chunk of the mobile phone market.

Sprint and RadioShack have discussed co-branding the stores, and according to Bloomberg's sources there is also the possibility another company could buy RadioShack and it keep it operating.

RadioShack tells NBC 5 they will not comment on or confirm Bloomberg's report.
