Fishy Web Site Lures Consumers Seeking DTV Converter Box Coupons

Typo leads consumers down stray path

A common Web site address error may lead consumers seeking DTV converter box coupons into trouble, the Better Business Bureau said.

Dee McMullen, of Azle, said she learned this when she mistakenly entered DTV.com, instead of the correct web address DTV.gov for information and coupons.  It turns out DTV.com leads directly to a site from a firm called SatelliteSoft.

The Web site advertises a satellite TV software product and seeks personal information from consumers.

"The company is trying to confuse consumers, or take advantage of consumers that would be going to DTV.gov," said David Beasley with the Dallas Better Business Bureau.

Even the BBB could not locate the company and it rates SatelliteSoft "unsatisfactory" because it failed to respond to a complaint.

"You really should be cautious doing business with companies that don’t give a lot of information about where they are or really who they are," Beasley said.

McMullen said her Web search with the incorrect address also led to other sites that seemed to be connected with DTV converter boxes or coupons, but were not.

She said she submitted her e-mail address to one and received suspicious e-mail solicitations, but no DTV converter coupon.

"And I didn’t want this to happen to other people," McMullen said. "It’s not a good thing."

The correct Web site for government information and converter box coupons is www.dtv.gov.
