Protest Leader Booked Into Dallas Jail on Probation Violation

The man who has been leading protests against Dallas police was booked back into jail Friday on a probation violation, police say.

Dominique Alexander, 27, was just released from jail Thursday following an arrest at a City Hall protest Wednesday afternoon.

Alexander now faces a charge of probation violation for injury to a child, elderly or disabled person with intention to cause serious bodily injury or mental injury.

Alexander and members of his group, Next Generation Action Network, have been leading demonstrations to demand change in the way the Dallas Police Department is structured and how the department interacts with the community.

The Next Generation Action Network had organized the July 7 rally and march in downtown Dallas that ended when a gunman ambushed and targeted Dallas police officers who had been monitoring the march.

This week, Dallas Police Chief David Brown called on Alexander to cancel or move future protests away from downtown, out of concern for the safety of the officers. Alexander was arrested on outstanding warrants and led away from City Hall in handcuffs Wednesday.

Alexander said he was unfairly targeted for arrest on a minor matter in retribution for criticizing police.

Alexander said he has a following and refuses to stop his protests.
