Proposal to Expand Fort Worth T Bus Service

When it comes to getting around Fort Worth quickly, riders of The T bus service say their daily commute is frustrating.

"It's very hard, because it's not efficient. Fort Worth needs a transit system," said rider Gorman Allen.

Which is why transportation administrators are proposing a master plan to upgrade service on The T to keep up with the city's rapid growth.

"We understand the frustration. This community has grown so fast that it has overwhelmed the transit system. This plan is meant to overcome those needs in this region," said Curvie Hawkins, assistant vice president of planning.

The proposal is the result of one year of planning and research with local riders.

"We wanted to hear where they wanted to go, how they wanted to get there – this plan is a result of those desires," Hawkins said.

The plan includes recommendations for upgrades to the current system, including:

  • Improving existing service
  • Expanding to new areas
  • Developing a frequent transit network
  • Building outlying transit centers
  • Improving and expanding express and regional service

Riders say the changes are necessary.

"I just think it's important. Traffic's a concern, and as the city grows and progresses you need other means of transportation," said Steve McCollough.

The next stop is for the master plan to go to The T Board of Directors for approval.

"We want this plan to be a welcomed plan and we know it will because it meets the desires of what we have heard," said Hawkins.

If it's approved, planners will then begin meeting with local city and financial partners to put the plan in place.
