Prayer Vigil Held for Slain Texas Sheriff's Deputy

Dozens of people have prayed and held hands to mourn a Texas sheriff's deputy who was fatally shot while at his Austin-area home.

Sgt. Craig Hutchinson of the Travis County Sheriff's Office was remembered Monday night in Round Rock, where he lived.

No one has been arrested in the slaying before dawn Monday during what appeared to be an attempted burglary of a shed at Hutchinson's residence.

The Austin American-Statesman reported some people at the vigil, in the parking lot of a municipal pool, wore T-shirts displaying U.S. flags. Others held patriotic signs that said: "Blessed Are The Peacemakers."

A sheriff's office statement says Hutchinson had gone off duty just minutes before he radioed in about prowlers in his yard — putting himself back on duty.

Rewards

Up to $30,000 in rewards have been offered for information leading to arrests in the fatal shooting of Hutchinson.

Texas Crime Stoppers on Tuesday announced a $15,000 reward for information leading to suspects in the fallen deputy's killing.

The reward from Texas Crime Stoppers, operating within the office of Gov. Greg Abbott's Criminal Justice Division, joins $10,000 posted by the U.S. Marshals Service. A municipal judge and ex-sheriff's office employee, Judge Kevin Madison, pledged a $5,000 reward for information leading to arrests.
