Woman Survives Being Shot 3 Times

Woman shot three times, not six as initially reported

A shooting in a Dallas apartment complex escalated into a hostage situation Sunday afternoon.

Residents of the Colonia Tepeyac Apartments on the 5800-block of Bernal Street reported hearing gunshots at about 3:45 p.m.

Maria Martinez, 33, and her common-law husband Ruben Obregon, 32, were inside their apartment arguing when police say he pulled out a gun and shot her three times.

Martinez then ran to the apartment of a nearby relative and collapsed.

Obregon then barricaded himself inside their apartment with the their twin 4-year-old boys as police and SWAT officers arrived at the scene.

For two hours negotiators talked with Obregon before he eventually surrendered.

The children were never harmed and have been released to the custody of relatives.

Martinez was transported to Methodist Central Hosptial in Dallas where she underwent surgery.  She survived, but her condition has not been released.

Obregon has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and family violence.

Initial reports from the police said the woman was shot six times, that was an error.

NBC 5's Greg Janda, Ray Villeda and Amanda Fitzpatrick contributed to this report.
