Popular Trail Still Closed Due to Floods

Northshore Trail is "most popular" in Dallas-Fort Worth

The "most well-known and most used trail in the entire Metroplex" is still closed nine months after spring flooding brought the water of Grapevine Lake up past its banks.

The water has eroded much of the Northshore Trail โ€” which runs 22.5 miles between Grapevine and Flower Mound along the shore of Grapevine Lake โ€” causing several points of it to drop straight off toward the water.

Flooding caused the lake to swallow much of the popular trail in the spring and fall, according to the trail steward who maintains the Northshore Trail for the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association. DORBA representatives have tried multiple times to make the trail suitable for riding and hiking, but the lake water has been too powerful.

"This is the first time since the 2007 flood that the trail has been shut down for this long," DORBA's Vic Dean said. "It is very disappointing to all the trail users that were so used to coming out to the trail."

According to the United States Army Corps of Engineers, which maintains Grapevine Lake, the water level cannot be lowered in one fell swoop because it is part of the flood control plan for the entire region.
