Ponder Police Officer Returns Fire, Fatally Shoots Armed Man

Investigators say a North Texas police officer returned fire and fatally shot a gunman during a confrontation in a driveway.

The Ponder Police Department officer was on paid administrative leave Tuesday. The officer, whose name wasn't immediately released, was not hurt.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the officer was on patrol Sunday night when gunshots were reported in a neighborhood.

Police said the officer responded and approached 40-year-old Victor Oswaldo Coronado-Martinez, of Ponder.

Investigators said the officer identified himself and ordered Coronado-Martinez to drop his gun. Authorities said Coronado-Martinez refused, fired at the officer but missed. The officer then shot the man, who died at the scene.

Texas Rangers are helping investigate the shooting in Ponder, a town of about 1,400 located 25 miles north of Fort Worth.
