Police Trying to Find Witnesses in Alleged Johnny Manziel Assault

Search warrants may be executed to get hotel surveillance video

Dallas police sources say they're finalizing a search warrant to get surveillance video from a boutique Uptown hotel where an alleged assault took place involving Johnny Manziel.

Detectives are also trying to see if the other restaurants and nightclubs the couple visited two weeks have relevant surveillance video.

At this point, sources say detectives don’t know if the alleged assault at Hotel ZaZa would have been captured on tape, but they'll soon execute a search warrant if need be to find out.

Also, detectives are trying to track down witnesses at the hotel and nearby bars and clubs.

Dallas police plan on talking with Crowley again this week to see if she recalls any names.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown said he wants to get it right and there is no timetable for making a decision on an arrest.

"We don’t have any updates but we're being very careful with this victim, that we go at the pace that's comfortable to the victim," said Brown. "We're proceeding as quickly as we can, but we're going at the victim's pace."

In the meantime, many legal experts are scratching their heads over Manziel’s decision to sign-off on Colleen Crowley’s protective order complaint.

Violating the court order likely means an arrest and jail-time.

"A protective order is a pretty big deal," said Jeff Anderson, a family law attorney in Dallas with more than 20 years of experience. "He can be taking her roses for Valentine’s Day and saying, '’I'm so sorry for everything I’ve done,' he gets close to her for whatever reason, he can be pulled to jail."

The two had dated for years and even lived together for several months back in Cleveland.

Now, "he can’t go over there, he can’t call her, he can’t text her, he can’t have his friend go over and say, 'Can you talk to Johnny? He misses you,'" Anderson said.

Anderson has no connection to this case, but in his opinion, "what I can see happening more than anything else is Johnny Manziel trying to stay out of the spotlight."

"It's pretty unusual to agree to a protective order right out of the box," he said. "So the only reason I can think of is that, in this case, Johnny Manziel is trying to get all this behind him as fast as he can possibly can, so he can focus on football and move on in his career."

The cell phones of Johnny Manziel and his parents are turned on; his lawyer is not returning phone calls.

The protective order lasts for two years and it goes both ways, meaning Colleen Crowley cannot text or call Johnny Manziel.

Hotel ZaZa has no comment.
