Police: Officer Shoots Machete-Wielding Man

Midland police said an officer fatally shot a man who barricaded himself in his home for nearly four hours and swung a machete at officers who entered.

Midland County mental health officials conducted a welfare check on 49-year-old Rosendo Rodriquez Monday and called police to report that he was acting aggressively. Officers tried to make contact with Rodriquez for hours before they entered the home and found him in the bathroom with the weapon.

Police said they shot Rodriquez with non-lethal beanbag rounds before he struck an officer with the dull side of the machete. An officer then fatally shot Rodriquez.

Sgt. Mitch Russell and Officer Sean Sharp were placed on administrative leave while the Texas Rangers investigate.
