Police: Man Attacked His Dog With Hammer

A West Texas pit bull is recovering after police said its owner tried to kill it with a knife and hammer.

Veterinarian Carren Bowden told KTXS-TV Thursday that the 4-year-old dog named Bruiser is expected to live, but could need treatment for unspecified skin issues. She's also watching the animal for post-traumatic stress.

Brownwood police said they went to the suspect's house Tuesday on an animal cruelty call. They found the man and Bruiser in the backyard and said the dog and hammer were covered in blood.

The man told officers that Bruiser had been suffering and that he was trying to put him down.

Bruiser will be fostered by Angles and Outlaws Bully Ranch in Stephenville when he is released.

No charges have been reported.
