Officer Involved Shooting Leaves One Dead

Suspect identified as Davis Thomas, 22

Lewisville police said they are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning.

Investigators said Davis Thomas, 22, stole a car from Highland Village, was involved in apparent road rage altercation and the followed the other driver to a Cracker Barrel in the 800 block of South Interstate 35E at about 11:47 a.m. After a brief confrontation, Thomas pointed a shotgun at the other driver and then walked away.

At about 12:45 p.m., police said a patrol officer saw the stolen vehicle and started following Thomas. A 5-minute chase ended when Thomas crashed into two other vehicles on East Round Grove Road near Rockbrook Drive. One woman whose car was hit was taken to the hospital.

Police said Thomas grabbed his shotgun and ran to the parking lot at a RaceTrac gas station. He unsuccessfully tried to take one car before getting into another one, owned by Erica Montes. She had just finished pumping her gas, saw him coming with the gun and hid behind her car.

“I was very scared," Montes said. "I didn’t know if he was going to shoot at me or grab me because the police had already surrounded him."

Other drivers were ducking for cover.

“At one point I was down in my car because I did see him running around with a shot gun, and I didn’t know which way he was going to go,” said Katy Gallagher.

Police said Thomas fired, and the patrol officer returned fire.

The officer rendered aid to Thomas until paramedics arrived, police said. Thomas was taken to Medical Center of Lewisville where he later died. The officer was not injured.

Lewisville police said that the officer will be placed on leave, per department policy.
